You don’t need to see the results of a Gallup poll to know that summer is always the most popular season for reading. Evidence of this comes via a deluge of emails to our Inboxes and posts on our social feeds from individuals returning from vacation and offering up their personal reviews on their Recommended Summer Reading List. The motivation as to what causes people to share their opinions varies between a sincere desire to enrich the lives of others and an attempt to portray oneself as a real renaissance man or woman.
Personally, I have never authored a book review or shared my recommended summer reading list. Mainly because my summer reading list normally consists of regulatory filings kindly brought to us by the SEC and FINRA. Returning from a much-needed vacation and suggesting that the SEC’s latest rule filing is a “must read for those who enjoy reading between the lines more than the lines themselves” or, “hit me up on DM with your answer to Q. 238 in the SEC’s proposal” would probably not enrich anyone’s life nor would it improve my image.
Personally, I have never authored a book review or shared my recommended summer reading list. Mainly because my summer reading list normally consists of regulatory filings kindly brought to us by the SEC and FINRA.
This summer was different, though. When I packed for a week out in Montauk, I included the obligatory few hundred pages of regulatory filings, but I also grabbed a new book written by long-time friend and CNBC Senior Markets Correspondent, Bob Pisani. The book is titled, Shut Up and Keep Talking: Lessons on Life and Investing from the Floor of the New York Stock Exchange.
As we head into Labor Day this coming weekend, the unofficial last weekend of summer, I’m proud to offer my first recommended summer reading book with the below review. Shut Up and Keep Talking: Lessons on Life and Investing from the Floor of the New York Stock Exchange doesn’t go on sale until mid-October, but you can pre-order it now. For those of us not in the book publishing world, pre-orders are a significant factor in determining whether or not a book makes it to a Best Sellers list, so consider pre-ordering your copy today!

Shut Up and Keep Talking: Lessons on Life and Investing from the Floor of the New York Stock Exchange is both entertaining and educating. Author Bob Pisani is able to cover an enormous amount of material and numerous events in succinct fashion. By never spending too much time on any one topic, Bob is able to hold the reader’s attention as he describes his countless encounters with famous individuals and his recollections on historical events that shaped not just the U.S. financial markets, but our nation as well.
Whether you know Bob personally or not, you will hear his voice throughout the book, and you will be moved intellectually with his ability to get inside your mind as he talks about behavioral finance, which recognizes the often-irrational nature of human decision-making.
In reviewing Shut Up and Keep Talking: Lessons on Life and Investing from the Floor of the New York Stock Exchange it is just as important to recognize what it is not. It is not a memoir of one person’s life or career, nor is it a history or how-to-invest book. It is simply a story told by a great storyteller who demonstrates true humility and appreciation for opportunities afforded him. Bob Pisani’s book is a fantastic read, not just for summer but for all seasons.
