85th Annual Market Structure Conference: Shaping the Future

Mike Rask, Hodges Capital & STA Chairman

Shaping the Future. We chose this as the 2018 Market Structure Conference title because we felt it captured the industry’s proactive response to changes in market structure brought on by technology and a regulatory regime that has shifted in the aftermath of the 2016 Presidential Election.

Technology and regulation have always had an influence on our industry, however most of us would be hard-pressed to find a point in history when their combined influences were felt to the degree we are experiencing today. Innovative technology like blockchain, as well as legacy technology (as in all things big data), are impacting market structure. We’ve also never been influenced to this extent by regulation, both domestic and international. Given these influences, a proactive response is appropriate and necessary.

As an organization that serves the individual, our goal is to inspire industry professionals to be proactive in shaping their future as well. This industry is constantly evolving and maintaining necessary skills is a challenge, even for the most talented of us. As this year’s theme is woven into panel discussions and fireside chats, we hope our attendees will not only be inspired to be proactive career-wise, but also better educated and informed.

While the conference title changes each year, you can expect certain parts of the program to be consistent with years past. We will kick off Wednesday morning with the 3rd Annual STA Women in Finance Symposium in the main conference hall. The Buy-Side Roundtable will feature a presentation by TABB Group’s Larry Tabb followed by a group discussion. Other topics will include: Equities, Exchange-Traded Products, Listed Options and MiFID II. Look for more details on content and speakers in the coming months.

We hope you will be able to join the 700 financial services professionals we expect to see in Washington DC this October. Until then, on behalf of the entire STA Board we wish you and your families a happy and safe summer!
